This morning, MJ noticed dolphins heading up the Corrotoman River around 6:30am. We put the Katy G in the water and tracked them down up river, just beyond Ball Point. There looked to be 10-12 in the pod, including some young ones sticking very close to their mothers. MJ got some good shots - here's a sampling.
The dolphins are wonderful creatures to watch in the water - they just glide along, almost effortlessly. We turned the engine off, and could hear them surface with air blowing out of their blowholes. It was nature at its best – water was calm, no wind, no human noise, just the whoosh of the dolphins as they broke the surface around us.
A couple in kayaks also came along to watch the dolphins. They told us that they see the dolphins on the Corrotoman once a year, so we were very fortunate that MJ had her eyes peeled this morning. Moments like this remind us that living here is a special experience.
When we came back to the dock, we spent some time catching crabs on a fishing line. Pulled them out of the water as they hung onto the bait, then, watched them skitter across the boards to drop back into the water. We are thinking that this is the kind of simple fun that our grandkids will love doing!
